I’m amazed how productive that hedge is – it’s a living buffet for the birds!

A delightful morning researching the history of quinces and the ecology of peat bogs #makesmehappy

Whilst all the other Liriodendron tulipifera are lit pure yellow and gold, one tree is covered with batik foliage - butter running through the veins where the tree has withdrawn its precious chlorophyll, the remaining islands waiting for reabsorption. The surface of these leaves pulls at my fingers as if its waxy coating resisted the scrunching and rinsing when the dye was finally set. Art in nature, nature in art.

The oca is having a floriferous year - spilling out of its pots and across the paths. Love the fact that the kids nibble leaves as they pass and we have so many ruby nuggets to look forward to in November...

Found myself sitting under the colossal black poplar by the Ashbrook watching the stream and listening to the birds. Must have taken a wrong turning on the way back from the school run! 😉

Just found a false widow spider in the bathroom. Never seen one before - fascinating creature.

Our four year old Quince 'Meeches Prolific' has excelled itself this year - after 13 fruits last year, we have just picked two basketfuls - over 100 quinces! I had no idea it had so many fruits and now we're salivating over jelly, membrillo, preserved quince in jelly and even a quince sorbet recipe... I hankered after my own quince tree for so many years - and now I'm in quince heaven!! 😊
